Detailed information about applications to College of Creative Arts postgraduate programmes.
To be considered for admission at Massey University you must complete and return an Application for Admission as an International Student form and provide the necessary supporting documents to the International Office.
The process for application to the Master of Design and the Master of Fine Arts is almost identical except for the submission of a research proposal in the Master of Design and an expression of interest in the Master of Fine Arts
Applicants apply by the following process:
1. Enrol at Massey University here. If you are new to Massey you will obtain a student number as part of this process, if you are a returning student use your current student ID and select the relevant programme. You will then be asked to submit the following:
a. Verified copies of your previous degree transcripts (unless you are a Massey graduate where these will be accessed internally) and verified copies of identification / residency status.
b. Documentation of your creative work. This should contain a concise selection of your previous and current work and/or include work that clearly shows the development of ideas and their context. Files should be provided in TIFF or JPEG formats. You may supply your documentation online through a transfer service such as Dropbox to firstname.lastname@example.org if you cannot upload this in a suitable file at the time of enrolment. Alternatively you may provide copies of images on a USB stick directly to the College of Creative Arts, Wellington Campus - please notify the postgraduate team if you are sending in hard copies or a USB stick via email email@example.com; please do not send the original artwork as we will not be able to return this to you.
c. For the Master of Design only:
Include a research proposal of up to three pages that introduces your past and present creative work, and outlines your potential MDes project, including:
- the preliminary research question(s)
- the context of the design issue
- possible industry linkages
- a schedule for how the project could develop over the year
- how you will fund your study
- a list of specialist equipment, software or facilities needed to complete the project
- a preliminary bibliography of central texts and design works.
For the Master of Fine Arts only:
Include a written expression of interest of one to two pages. This should outline your past and present creative work and indicate what you wish to explore through MFA study at Massey University. It may include references to key texts and/or artworks that provide context for your own work. Please also provide an indication of any specialist equipment, software or facilities needed to undertake your MFA study.
d. For all applicants who are not graduates of the Massey University College of Creative Arts, a written reference from someone qualified to discuss your potential as a postgraduate student.
Once your full application has been received you will be invited to interview. Interviews last approximately 20 minutes and can take place on campus or via Skype/telephone. The interview panel will comprise of two or three members of the postgraduate faculty who will ask you to discuss the work you submitted with your application, and the preliminary research area that you outlined in your proposal.
You will be given the opportunity to ask the panel questions about the Masters programme for which you are applying and studying at the College of Creative Arts. You are welcome to bring a support person to your interview.
