Dr Huhana Smith (Ngāti Tukorehe, Raukawa ki te Tonga) is a visual artist, curator and principle research investigator. She leads collaborative, interdisciplinary, kaupapa Māori and action research projects. Huhana's teams investigate freshwater decline into the marine for Māori water/coastal lands and related biodiversity. More recently, they have addressed climate change concerns, where Mātauranga Māori methods are used to supplement art and design’s visual systems and scientific data. When combined in exhibitions as research techniques, they expand how solutions might integrate complex issues, and be more accessible for local communities. Phase 2 climate change research continues…with international art, design and architecture exhibition in development.
